Date Night With John Christian
Last Friday night I decided that John Christian and I needed a date! He has been very good about sharing me with the other children at the preschool. In addition to that he has become quite the little helper. He already knows how to take the dirty dishes off of the table and bring them to me when I am loading the dishwasher. I rinse them & he helps put them into the dishwasher. Once they are clean he even knows how to put the pots, spoons, forks, & non-sharp knives away. I'm quite happy him learning to be responsible. This may not last long, but at least it's a start.
We left Charlie & Zach at home around 6:30 & headed off in search of new shoes. We drove all over b/c who knew that the children's shoe stores close at 6PM on a Friday night which was also payday? John Christian was thrilled at the possibility of picking out a new pair of tennis shoes & so I drove until we found an Athlete's Foot or something that was open because he was devastated to learn the shoe store we wanted to go to was closed & that he might not get new shoes. There was no way I was going to disappoint him on our special night out! If he wanted new shoes he was getting new shoes even if I had to break into the store & take them!! :+)
It turns out this shoe store was a great choice! Everything in the store was 1/2 off!! Those are my kind of shoes! We found a sales lady & John Christian immediately became her new friend along with most of the people in the store! He is the friendliest little guy who (sometimes scary) never meets a stranger! The lady measured his little foot which is now nearly a size 8 in toddlers! I decided that he could pick out any shoes with one exception. He could not have the all black Nike basketball hightops that he first picked out. This didn't seem to bother him much because he found a white pair of Nike's with black stripes & his favorite color on the swoosh & heel - Blue! I figured Zach would think I'd lost my mind, but they really weren't that bad & they were 1/2 off!
John Christian wanted to wear his shoes out of the store. He had the shakes he was so excited. He even stopped everyone in the store to show them his new shoes & when I say everyone I mean everyone! Of course this didn't last long.....
My boys are much like their mamma in that they don't like to wear shoes. Last year someone gave John Christian hand me down shoes (looked brand new to me) called Primigis. I had know idea what they were. All I knew is that they were different looking, had velcro, & John Christian could put them on all by himself. He loved them! Since he liked them so much I thought I'd look them up online. YIKES!! These are $65 shoes! To some folks this may not seem like a big deal & yes I pay that much for my own shoes, but I wear them for years and years! Not to mention I've broken both ankles twice & have screwed up feet. BUT back to the story..... Now he won't wear real shoes. He had LL Bean sandals that he wore this summer without too much problem, but wouldn't wear the tennis shoes I bought him in the Spring. He says, "They are too hard!"
So..... He wore the new shoes into Barnes & Nobles for a little while where we drank frappichinos, (his was vanilla decaff, but all the other mothers were appalled that I would let my child have this at night) played with Thomas the Train & bought a book called "How I Became A Pirate" & "Green Eggs & Ham" (his new favorite. Before we could even get into the car he told me he wanted to take off his new shoes. He said, "They are too hard." He also told me I could take them back to the store! My child is ruined and it's all my fault! He's not even 3 yet! Oh well!! Maybe there are worse things! The good news is in a few years his feet will be big enough for little Berkenstocks. I can totally see him wearing them year round like his father & my friend Melissa!
Either way it was a really fun night for both of us! It was nice to give him some special attention & in return I got extra hugs and kisses along with "I love you Mommy!" Although, I have to say that several times he told me he missed his dad and baby Charlie & next time they could come along!
** Quick note: He did ask to wear the new shoes to school on Monday & wore them until we left to go home. He wore them again for a few hours today! We are making progress!
