Memorial Weekend & Yet Another Trip To The ER! (A warning to my friends with kids!)
Let's see! I'm not even sure where to begin! We didn't do anything in celebration of Memorial Weekend & Zach actually having Friday & Monday off!! Zach was sick with the same cold virus that we all caught from John Christian. It didn't help that while Zach was in the woods all week training there were controlled burns & he had to breathe in the smoke from the fires. Fun!
On a positive note other than a little runny nose John Christian is feeling much better! He is a little sad that Zach had to go back to the field tonight & won't be home until Friday. I have to give John Christian credit though because he is learning to be quite the little trooper. The up & coming months are going to be difficult for him while Zach continues to train for his scheduled year long deployment to Iraq in October. Part of the reason we haven't really been anywhere besides the boys being sick is that we are taking much needed time to just be together as a family.
I'm not too worried about Charlie at this point just because unfortunately Zach's been gone so much since before & after he was born. I hate that he doesn't get to spend as much time with Zach as John Christian did when he was this age, but we do the best we can considering the situation. He loves Zach & actually crawls to the door when he hears it open in the early evening saying, "dadada" b/c he knows it's him without even hearing his voice or seeing him. I am amazed by this!
Charlie did have a rough weekend. He started with a fever on Thursday. He also quit sleeping & got to the point where if he wasn't touching me he was crying. Thank goodness for our Pediatrician's office. They were open for an hour on Saturday. Just as suspected Charlie has an ear infection to go along with the cold virus. The doctor started him on the antibiotic Omnicef. He's taken this twice before. The first time it gave him diarrhea, but last time it was the opposite with constipation.
So, I didn't give it any thought. I just wanted him to feel better!
Sunday night before I put him to bed I went to change his poopy diaper. Everything in the diaper was brick red. I could not figure this out because the child had pretty much quit eating anything but formula & the antibiotic is white. I got on the internet & searched what could cause the diaper to look this way. (Bad idea) What I didn't search was information about the medicine b/c I'd read the fact sheet before & the main side effects were the ones he had before in addition to blood in the stool. Needless to say I was pretty freaked out by the diaper. So, off to the ER we went on the Sunday night of Memorial Weekend!
Can you say insane? This time there was a young girl in there & from what I could hear I think she tried to hurt herself. Plus, another girl had a rash that was suspected to be chicken pox. I'm sure we will end up with that next week despite vaccines b/c Charlie hasn't had his yet. Ok, back to the story..... We finally did get back to see a doctor. This time it was the older guy who is much better than the young Dr. Smith John Christian has seen twice. He was actually the same dr Charlie saw when he did the flying leap out of Zach's arms which took us to the ER for a CT Scan & arm xray a while back. These people must think I am an exremely parinoid parent. I'd just rather be safe than sorry.
They checked Charlie's diaper twice because even they were sure & were a little concerned. After 2 tests on what was in the diaper they discovered there wasn't any blood. They said the antibiotic sometimes causes this to happen. OK - is it me or does anyone else reading this agree with me that this should be a warning sticker on the bottle? They kept him on the antibiotic & said he'd be just fine.
We got home sometime after midnight. When we got home I searched the internet & had to look hard, but did find that occasionally the Omnicef will turn the child's stool brick red due to a chemical reaction with the iron in the formula. At least now I am more informed! Once again Charlie refused to sleep alone & I held him all night long. I really hope that he feels better by his first birthday. He was 9 months old on Saturday! Happy months to him! :) I
I hope that those of you reading this don't think I am complaining because here is the thing: It is hard to watch your children suffer whether it is physical or emotional suffering. God has blessed me a hundred times over by bringing these 2 little boys into my life! While I can't always fix them I wouldn't trade the fact that they are my little boys & I am the one that gets to hold them & care for them while they are sick for all the riches in the world. I may be a sleep deprived walking Zombie, but at least I am a truly happy one!

Margaret has been on Omnicept (or however you spell it) once and her poop was that scary red. YIKES! Thank goodness my pharmacist warned me about it ahead of time--or we would have been at the ER too!I hope you all are feeling better soon.
